The Pre-Monsoon Update

Hello dear readers !

I hope that my post finds you in your best spirits. Well the monsoon season is right around the corner, and therefore here I am, with my views, some handy tips and pieces of advice regarding the same. I hope they are taken in the right spirit.

Well monsoons in India are quite synonymous with potholes and puddles on the road. So my first piece of advice would be to ensure safety. And not just yours. We do what is necessary to ensure a good and healthy monsoon for ourselves, We buy new raincoats and umbrellas and all other rainproof stuff. This year lets go a tiny step beyond that. One useful tip would be to include a first aid kit in your bag along with the other necessary stuff. Also carrying an extra dry scarf or maybe a spare cap/hat wouldn’t surely take up much space, but instead you could find yourself being helpful to a friend in need.

Also many of us live in homes which have balconies / terraces / backyards. So whenever it rains, try keeping buckets or old vessels in those spaces so that rain water can be collected. This water can later be used for washing your hands and feet or maybe your clothes or even your vehicles ! This way rainwater does not go waste, and we save some too. No harm in trying, right ?

Another good thing to do would be to donate your old raincoats and umbrellas to people who really need them but cannot afford to get new ones. In case you do not know such people there are various organisations who take in such donations and provide this stuff to the needy.

Taking a break from the do’s here’s a don’t for you. People who have plants in their places generally water them every 2-3 days. Out of habit, they might tend to do this in the monsoon too. In my opinion, we can save that water instead as plants get plenty of water from the rains themselves and hence we could minimise our water usage. Because providing excess water to the plants only causes the salts and minerals to rise up to the surface of the soil which in turn is going to be disadvantageous to them. Although that completely depends on the amount of rain we get so do bear that in mind.

Here’s another suggestion. Try to get the maximum advantage of the natural light instead of switching on the lights in your room. As the sky is mostly overcast during this season, the sun isn’t too harsh and gives the necessary amount of brightness. More often than not, its going to be breezy outside. So try to do your work by the windows/ openings so as to save electricity instead of using air conditioners and fans whenever possible.

I hope these tips were helpful. Apart from that, take care of yourselves !  Have a great monsoon ! 😀
